چکیده

Abstract The thermal sensitivity of metabolism is widely studied due to its perceived importance for organismal fitness and resilience future climate change. Almost all such studies estimate at a variety constant temperatures, with very little work exploring how varies during temperature However, in nature rarely static, so our existing understanding from experiments may not reflect influences natural systems. Using closed-chamber respirometry, we estimated the aerobic metabolic rate an aquatic ectotherm, Atlantic ditch shrimp Palaemonetes varians, under varying conditions. We continuously measured oxygen consumption heating, cooling starting trials range acclimation temperatures exposing rates In broad sense, cumulative static exposures corresponded estimates derived ramping experiments. further analyses showed that increases both faster heating cooling, rapid driving higher than if were warmed slowly. These results suggest systematic influence on metabolism. With influential concepts as theory ecology founded data experiments, encourage exploration variable impacts organism energetics, test generality findings across species. This especially important given forecasts heat waves are characterised by increased

Regional blood flow in sea turtles: implications for heat exchange in an aquatic ectotherm.

Despite substantial knowledge on thermoregulation in reptiles, the mechanisms involved in heat exchange of sea turtles have not been investigated in detail. We studied blood flow in the front flippers of two green turtles, Chelonia mydas, and four loggerhead turtles, Caretta caretta, using Doppler ultrasound to assess the importance of regional blood flow in temperature regulation. Mean blood f...

Energetic costs of cellular computation.

Cells often perform computations in order to respond to environmental cues. A simple example is the classic problem, first considered by Berg and Purcell, of determining the concentration of a chemical ligand in the surrounding media. On general theoretical grounds, it is expected that such computations require cells to consume energy. In particular, Landauer's principle states that energy must...

Energetic costs of digestion in Australian crocodiles

Wemeasured standardmetabolic rate (SMR) and themetabolic response to feeding in theAustralian crocodiles, Crocodylus porosus andC. johnsoni. Both species exhibit a response that is characterised by rapidly increasing metabolism that peaks within 24 h of feeding, a postfeeding metabolic peak (peak _ VO2) of 1.4–2.0 times SMR, and a return to baseline metabolism within 3–4 days after feeding. Post...

Energetic Extremes in Aquatic Locomotion by Coral Reef Fishes

Underwater locomotion is challenging due to the high friction and resistance imposed on a body moving through water and energy lost in the wake during undulatory propulsion. While aquatic organisms have evolved streamlined shapes to overcome such resistance, underwater locomotion has long been considered a costly exercise. Recent evidence for a range of swimming vertebrates, however, has sugges...
